October - Breast cancer awareness month

A friend just sent me an email reminder that this is breast cancer awareness month. I had forgotten. Anyway, the email had the cutest picture of a little girl with a special message on her shirt.

Amen, sista, amen. It's not too late, if you haven't already, do your self exams at home and also consider making that mammogram appointment soon.

I have a grumpy face like that little girl, too. While I do hope we find a cure, I have more modest goals, like being able to get screened.

My mom has had a lump removed from her breasts more than once. None have been cancerous, Thank God, but it worries me. So I want to get a mammogram and have been asking since I was about 30. Well, my doctors/insurance don't want to do this until 40! There's even a free "mammovan" that is a mobile unit that is coming to where I work, but they won't take anyone under 40 either!?! I personally find this outrageous and hope that when I finally do have the test, we don't all regret this arbitrary ageism.

I understand that they have statistically decided that there is very little detected before a certain age, but with a family history, you would think that they could make allowances if for no other reason than peace of mind.

Grrr!
