So, school me...

OK, I've heard before, that you can get in pretty deep trouble for 'stealing' music from the internet. I've used LimeWire for a long time. I understand it to be a free file sharing service. I don't use it alot, but from time to time, I will go on there to see if I can find an old song or to listen to different performances of songs I like to see which CD I'd like to go out and buy. So am I stealing? I'm not reselling anything I get....
Can anyone shed some light, please?

Yes, you are stealing. If you acquire music that you did not purchase, you are stealing. It's just that simple.

Sorry to sound harsh, but I'm sick of people who have this misconception that they're not stealing if they download from only the popular artists or if they're just downloading for personal use. If you didn't buy it, you stole it.

Don't appologize for the truth. Sometimes, it is harsh. It's ok. And I agree, it is deffinately a big misconception, the concepts behind downloading for personal use.
Although, I must admit, I have downloaded some songs by titles I thought were what I was looking for, listened to them all and deleted completely the wrong ones. Followed by deciding which ones I liked and then went to the store and bought the CDs with those songs. Sometimes when I go to the store, I have limited access to the tracks on the cds, and limited funds to make purchases. So it helps knowing exactly which CDs I want to buy when I get to the store. I've bought CDs before that were not good, not what I thought it was and never listened to again. Like that Jewel Cd. So I know I'm trying to justify myself here, but it does help to hear the actual tracks beforehand. I've never downloaded full CDs. Also, sometimes, I do searches to see who else might have performed certain songs or what album a song is on...I have visited the site just for info...so I can purchase.
Oh well, I can't change the past.

If the RIAA hits you with one of the lawsuits that they randomly hit each month, they won't care why. They just make you settle at somewhere $3,000 and $6,000 last I heard.

Point taken. Since I'm fresh outta 3 K and 6 K bills, I'll steer clear of indulging from now on.
It does make one wonder how they can have websites like that up and running if it's against the law. But I guess there are alot of 'NO-NO's" online. To think otherwise would be foolish!
